Beauty School: What is Clean Beauty?
Share
When people say “clean beauty,” they’re usually referring to skincare, haircare, or cosmetic products that are formulated to be safer for people and, often, the environment. But the term is not strictly regulated, so it can mean slightly different things depending on the brand. Let’s break it down clearly:
1. Core Idea
Clean beauty products aim to avoid ingredients that are considered harmful, toxic, or controversial, especially with long-term use.
2. Commonly Avoided Ingredients
Some of the most cited “no-go” ingredients include:
-Parabens (preservatives linked to hormone disruption in some studies)
-Sulfates (like SLS/SLES, which can irritate skin)
-Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
-Phthalates (often in fragrances)
-Certain synthetic dyes and fragrances
-Mineral oils, petroleum byproducts, or silicones in some interpretations

3. What Clean Beauty Can Still Include
Importantly, clean does not mean “inactive” or weak.” A clean product can contain:
-Active acids like AHAs (glycolic, lactic), BHAs (salicylic), PHAs
-Retinoids or vitamin C
-Botanical extracts and oils
-Hyaluronic acid or peptides
The difference is that the product focuses on effective ingredients without including harsh or controversial chemicals.
